I’m well acquainted with the idea of hinterlands, born and raised in Superior, Wisconsin. Although I have since moved I still can easily recall the benign neglect we experienced regularly from Madison and a total blank look nationally.
Like upstate New York northern Wisconsin isn’t very populated but has miles of beautiful outdoors suitable for hiking, fishing, camping and canoeing.
Also found my way here through Kingsnorth's Substack, and mighty happy to have landed here. Look forward to messages from various and sundry hinterlands, best of luck, bon voyage.
I have been delving into some Greenland / Scandinavian sites out of curiosity. I do believe some of my ancestry originates from that area. Anyway, I've been enjoying the videos of a geologist who helps educate the lay person about the many geological forms and conditions of our mother earth - amazing stuff - here is one of his videos if you're curious or interested. https://youtu.be/CYS3r3tk2GI?si=yau5Dmwjhg4B9pDA
Looking forward to future exploring into "the back of beyond", my favorite places...
As soon as I find work again, I'll definitely make the switch to "paid." It was the recommendation in a piece by Paul Kingsnorth that led me to this substack and I've not been disappointed! I've enjoyed what I've found and am looking forward to what comes next.
Oh, and this may be belated, but let me welcome you into the DD-214 Alumni club!
Dan, my photograph is featured just above the photo you're referring to. I'm wearing a red hat.
I'm heartened to know you're encouraged as well; I think we're living through a very interesting moment for writers. It's incredible to not have to be beholden to the whims of publishers, especially in our decidedly Bolshevik era.

The focus on isolated places is so good. What an excellent idea. You're going to make it! Merry Christmas!

Thank you brother, I appreciate your kindness. Mr. Kingsnorth certainly did me a righteous favor with his mention of me.
And yes, it's quite a thrill to be a "DD-214 Alumni" as well. Now I'm my own Chief, Section Commander, and Admiral, all in one. God bless ya!

So? No to college? My youngest as well. He studied history undergrad. GI bill for Master’s lost his interest.
Your hats obscure your face. Coy, yes, but when will we see who you are?
Your success gives me courage that my own space here, begun July last, will find a continuing audience.
